Executive Director’s Report
My favorite time of the year has always been the holiday season – starting with Thanksgiving and ending with Christmas. When I was growing up, celebrating through our faith and with our family came first but a close second was reaching out to the shut-ins and the service men. Mom had many friends who lived alone due to severe physical conditions or old age. Throughout the year I accompanied her on visits to see that they were alright, to run errands for them and to provide healthy meals. When the holidays arrived the visits increased, holiday meals were delivered and presents were handed out – no one was lonely, no one forgotten. Throughout the year the women of Martinez ran a Canteen to offer hospitality to the service men traveling through by train. Many times they came to our house for a home cooked meal. During the holidays we baked cookies and sent them around the world to these special friends. As a family we were not wealthy but my brother Ken and I learned, from the example of our parents, the joy of sharing what we had with others. Today I continue this family tradition through the Bay Area Crisis Nursery. You, our donors, enable me to do this – your generous sharing supports families with young children – your generous sharing impacts the future of our community.
As I headed to my office to write this holiday message I went through the Nursery. Three infants, all under six months old, were in the dining area – one enjoying a ride in the infant swing, one sound asleep in a crib and the third, a one month old little boy, was being given a bottle. If we were not here, two of these little ones would be couch hopping or sleeping in cars with their homeless families. The third baby boy would soon be joining them if dad lost his job. His dad needs to work in order to keep his job and his home. He is working through a family crisis, has no support nearby but family support is on the way. The results of the joy of sharing is evident in these little ones who have a safe place to live, excellent care and a loving environment. Their parents have our support and our help in getting through the crisis. You our supporters, through your generous sharing of your time, your special talents and your resources make all of this possible.
We are grateful to each and every one of you for your generous sharing. The Board, the staff, the volunteers and especially the families with young children struggling through difficult times appreciate your loving support. Your gifts allow us to keep a safe place for children available throughout the year. During the holiday season your increased sharing enables our families to celebrate according to their family traditions.
May God bless you and your families, especially during this holiday season, with Peace, Joy and Good Health.
